COMMUNITY ADVOCATE

  1. Background
    The THRIVE Project, funded by UNITAID and implemented through AFROCAB and the THRIVE Consortium, was established to advance advocacy, influence policy, and implement community-led interventions that strengthen responses to Advanced HIV Disease (AHD) at both the national and community levels. In Nigeria, NEPWHAN serves as the national implementing partner leading community engagement, advocacy, and community-led monitoring (CLM) activities under the THRIVE framework.

    The Community Advocate (CA) is the frontline voice of the project—bridging the gap between people living with HIV (PLHIV), community structures, and healthcare facilities to ensure that HIV and AHD services are accessible, client-centered, and rights-based.
  2. Purpose of the Role
    The Community Advocate will spearhead community-led monitoring, advocacy, and awareness initiatives on Advanced HIV Disease (AHD) across Anambra and Benue States. The role focuses on documenting barriers, promoting rights-based health access, facilitating service linkages, and strengthening feedback mechanisms between communities and health systems.
  3. Key Responsibilities
     Implement community-led monitoring (CLM) and advocacy activities in line with the THRIVE project’s AHD objectives.
     Conduct house-to-house visits and participate in community outreaches, leveraging existing HIV structures and PLHIV networks within the state.
     Visit health facilities regularly to engage with healthcare workers, document client experiences, and gather feedback on service delivery.
     Act as frontline drivers of AHD programming by supporting case identification, treatment literacy, referrals, stigma reduction, and community feedback mechanisms to strengthen HIV service delivery.
     Facilitate community consultations, focus group discussions, and advocacy dialogues with PLHIV, caregivers, and service providers.
     Identify and document barriers to HIV and AHD service delivery, including stockouts, human rights violations, and stigma-related issues.
     Submit timely community monitoring reports and success stories using approved

    NEPWHAN and THRIVE tools.
     Collaborate with state NEPWHAN teams and partners to escalate advocacy issues and promote accountability in HIV programming.
     Ensure strict compliance with PSEAH (Protection from Sexual Exploitation, Abuse, and Harassment) and uphold NEPWHAN’s Code of Conduct and ethical standards.
     Participate in capacity-building sessions, review meetings, and stakeholder engagements organized by PWHAN, AFROCAB, or the THRIVE Consortium.
     Perform any other duties as assigned by the Project Coordinator or State Team Lead.
  4. Required Qualifications
     Minimum of National Diploma (ND) or equivalent; a Bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences, Public Health, or related field is an advantage.
     Demonstrated experience in community engagement, HIV programming, or advocacy work, especially within PLHIV networks.
     Strong communication, interpersonal, and documentation skills.
     Proven understanding of HIV, AHD, and community health systems.
     Ability to work independently and meet deadlines with minimal supervision.
  5. Level of Effort and Remuneration
    Level of Effort: Part-time (activity-based).
    Monthly Allowance: ₦75,000 (Seventy-Five Thousand Naira only).
  6. Safeguarding and PSEAH Commitment
    NEPWHAN maintains a zero-tolerance policy for sexual exploitation, abuse, and harassment (PSEAH). All staff and representatives must adhere strictly to NEPWHAN’s safeguarding and ethical standards. Any breach will attract immediate disciplinary action, including termination.
